The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) are recruiting two GIS Scientists to work within the Geographical Information Systems Team on a wide range of GIS projects.
 
HSL offers a wide range of general and specific GIS support and analysis to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and commercial customers. Our GIS specialists apply their skills and a variety of GIS analysis and support tools to a range of health and safety applications
 
You will work on a range of projects, carrying out research and support work. Sometimes acting as project leader, you will help provide bespoke GIS solutions for customers and assist in the development of bespoke desktop and web based applications. In addition, you will also assist in the running of the National Population Database and in managing and maintaining the GIS database of digital mapping products, including OS MasterMap.
 
Well organised when working to deadlines, with a collaborative approach, you can plan, organise and prioritise your work effectively and can operate successfully within a team to deliver both quality and timely results. Your excellent verbal and written communication skills will be put to good use when liaising on the preparation of proposals for new project opportunities, and when writing papers and presenting research at conferences and seminars.
 
You will have a good honours degree (or equivalent) in GIS, Geography, Maths, Environmental Sciences or another relevant scientific discipline, and experience of using MapInfo and/or ESRI ArcGIS products and of using and/or developing GIS applications. Self-motivated, disciplined with a professional attitude, you also have experience in using and manipulating GIS data.
 
This post is offered at band 4 or band 5. For a band 4 appointment, you will have greater depth and breadth of experience and be able to demonstrate sound knowledge and expertise in government related GIS work and projects.
